Variant cultivars (varieties and hybrids) of sorghum were estimated for per cent earhead damage and yield loss caused by earhead caterpillar, Helicoverpa armigera. Within varieties DSV-6 recorded lowest per cent (26.66) earhead damage and high yield of 29.25 q/ha without taking protection. In plots where protection measures were taken with malathion DSV-6 recorded highest (95.0) per cent earhead avoidable damage but DSV-3 recorded highest per cent avoidable yield loss of 27.01. Among hybrids, CSH-14 and CSH-23 recorded lowest and equal (16.66) per cent earhead damage with yield of 36.22 and 37.66 q/ha, respectively in unprotected plots. Whereas in protected plots (malathion 5D), CSH-16 recorded highest (92.6) per cent of earhead avoidable damage but DSV-3 recorded highest per cent avoidable loss of 27.01. If we look out the results, 93.2 per cent of earhead avoidable damage and 17.46 per cent avoidable yield loss was noticed in protected plots over unprotected irrespective of cultivars.Keywords

The groundnut leafminer, Aproaerema modicella Deventer, is a serious insect pest of groundnut in many South Asian and South-East Asian countries. In India, it has been reported in severe form on groundnut from Karnataka (Usman and Puttarudraiah, 1955), Andhra Pradesh (Krishnamurthy Rao et al., (1962), Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu (Rai, 1976). The Leafminer however is attacked by many species of parasitoids in nature.Keywords

Detailed biology of the parasitoid Eucelatoria bryani Sabrosky was studied under laboratory condition. The incubation period and duration of first, second and third instars were 138 ± 2.02, 29.93 ± 2.01, 33.67 ± 1.95 and 36.87 ± 2.47 respectively. The pre-pupal and pupal periods were 5.40 ± 1.18 and 6.93 ± 0.96 days, respectively. Total life cycle occupied 23.89 ± 1.04 days. Food influenced the fecundity and longevity of the parasitoid.Keywords

Experiments were carried out on the weather based relationship of pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) during Rabi 2011-12 and 2012-13 at the Main Agricultural Research Station, Dharwad. The analysis comprised correlations between the pod damage with prevailing weekly meteorological parameters during 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks lead time (prior) and same week of the observations revealed the following results. Forecasting model for per cent pod damage shown maximum temperature at 4 weeks lead time is consistently negatively and highly significant association with per cent pod damage in early sown crop. In case of normal and late sown crop, minimum temperature at 3 weeks lead time is consistently negatively and highly significant association with per cent pod damage by the prediction model.Keywords
